History of the coin

The £5 coin is also called a Crown. These were issued to commemorate mainly Royal achievements, but now also include British achievements and anniversaries too.

When the first Crown was issued in 1953, to commemorate the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, it was worth 5 shillings and it wasn’t until 1990 that it was worth £5. Although these coins are not circulated, they are still legal tender. Some shops and banks do not accept them, however, and you’re unlikely to find one in your change.
